Why Comparing Bids is a Must
Gregg Cantor, president of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel discusses the importance of comparing bids when building a home.
Details on ‘Comparing Bids’
[Gregg] If you’re planning on making some home improvements, comparing bids can be a daunting task. Start with a clear scope of work to level the playing field when talking with different contractors. Bids for single trade projects like plumbing, heating, solar, turf, or hardscape, are pretty easy to evaluate as long as they’re based on the same scope of work, materials, warranty and experience in the field. To make your final decision, you should evaluate the price and the value of the project along with your overall impression of the particular business. For more complicated projects, like full kitchen remodeling, additions, or whole home renovations, there’s no way to accurately compare quotes without developing plans because structural work, fixtures and finishes are involved. In those cases I recommend choosing a company based on portfolio, references and reputation. Either way, don’t complicate the process by getting too many bids. I recommend doing preliminary research and phone consultations to narrow your choices to two or three companies.
